Understanding Low Mood

It doesn't always look like sadness.
Sometimes it just feels like nothing.

Low mood and depression can show up in quiet ways. Losing interest in things you used to care about. Feeling flat or heavy for no obvious reason. Going through the motions without really being there. Not all of it looks the way you'd expect.

You don't need to be at rock bottom to reach out. Our registered psychologists and counsellors can support you wherever you are right now, at your own pace, without pressure.

What We Support

Low mood can show up in many ways.

Persistent Low Mood

A heaviness that lingers day after day, making even the smallest tasks feel like a lot to ask of yourself.

Loss of Interest

Things that used to feel meaningful or enjoyable now seem distant, flat, or just not worth it.

Fatigue & Low Energy

Constant tiredness that rest doesn't seem to ease. Everything takes more out of you than it should.

Difficulty Concentrating

Brain fog, forgetfulness, and trouble making decisions that once felt straightforward.

Sleep Disruption

Sleeping too much, too little, or lying awake in the early hours with thoughts that won't slow down.

Pulling Away

Stepping back from people and activities you care about, not out of choice, but because connection feels like too much right now.

Sound Familiar?

Some of this might sound familiar.

If any of this feels like you, it's worth talking to someone. You don't need to have it figured out first. If you're in crisis right now, please reach out to Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636.

Start Your Journey
  • You've been feeling flat, empty, or numb for a while, not just a bad week

  • Things you used to enjoy have lost their pull, and you're not sure why

  • You feel tired most of the time, even after sleeping

  • Concentrating, making decisions, or getting through the day takes considerable effort

  • You've been pulling back from the people and things in your life

  • You carry a low-level sense of guilt, worthlessness, or feeling like a burden

  • Your appetite or sleep has shifted noticeably

  • You've had thoughts that life isn't worth living, or that others would be better off without you

Our Approach

How we work with depression and low mood.

Evidence-based therapy can be helpful for depression and low mood. We use approaches tailored to you, delivered with patience and without rushing.

Step 1

Start with an honest conversation

No forms, no checklists. Your first session is about you telling your story in your own way, at your own pace. We listen before we do anything else.

Step 2

Understand what's going on

Low mood often connects to bigger things: unprocessed grief, burnout, life changes, or patterns that have been around for a long time. We gently explore what's underneath it.

Step 3

Find small ways forward

We focus on small, manageable steps rather than big changes. Reconnecting with things that once felt meaningful, bit by bit, can help rebuild a sense of momentum.

Step 4

Build something that lasts

As things ease, we help you recognise your own patterns and build skills to support your wellbeing over time, so you're not starting from scratch if things get hard again.

A rough patch tends to ease once the circumstances change. With depression and persistent low mood, the heaviness often stays regardless of what's happening around you. If you've felt flat, disconnected, or exhausted for more than a couple of weeks, it's worth talking to someone. You don't need a diagnosis to reach out.

It's a conversation, not an assessment. Your practitioner will listen to what's been going on, help you make sense of patterns, and work with you on small, practical steps. There's no pressure to have it all figured out or to perform. You can go at whatever pace feels right.

Therapy can be helpful even when low mood has been around for a while. The length of time you've felt this way doesn't determine what's possible. We'll assess what's right for you and work from there.

Not necessarily. Therapy alone may be helpful for many people. Some people also benefit from working alongside their GP on medication. We can help you think through what might be right for your situation, and work collaboratively with other healthcare providers where appropriate.

It varies from person to person, and it's genuinely hard to say in advance. We check in regularly so the approach can be adjusted as you go. The aim is always to give you what you actually need, not to pad things out.

That's completely okay. You don't have to share anything you're not comfortable with. Your practitioner will follow your lead. Everything happens at your pace, not ours.
