Understanding Counselling

You don't need a diagnosis
to deserve support.

Not everything needs a clinical label. Sometimes life just feels heavy, confusing, or overwhelming — and having a skilled professional to talk it through with can make all the difference.

Counselling at Mehema is a space for you to think out loud, make sense of what you're experiencing, and develop clarity about what comes next. Whether it's a specific issue or a general feeling that things aren't right, we're here to listen.

What We Support

What people come to counselling for.

Life Transitions

New jobs, moving cities, relationship changes, parenthood — navigating big shifts without a roadmap.

Feeling Stuck

Knowing something isn't right but not being able to name it or figure out what to do about it.

Decision-Making

Career crossroads, relationship questions, or any big decision where you could use a sounding board.

Emotional Processing

Working through feelings you've been suppressing, avoiding, or struggling to make sense of.

Personal Growth

You're not in crisis, but you want to understand yourself better and live more intentionally.

Workplace Issues

Conflict with colleagues, career dissatisfaction, imposter syndrome, or feeling undervalued.

Our Approach

How counselling works.

Our approach is warm, evidence-based, and tailored to you. There's no one-size-fits-all — your practitioner adapts to what you need, not the other way around.

Step 1

Listen without agenda

Your first sessions are about you being heard — truly heard. We don't jump to solutions or impose a framework. We start with understanding.

Step 2

Help you see clearly

Through reflection and gentle exploration, we help you identify what's really going on beneath the surface — the patterns, beliefs, and emotions driving your experience.

Step 3

Build practical clarity

Whether it's developing coping strategies, making a difficult decision, or changing a pattern — we help you move from confusion to clarity.

Step 4

Support your growth

As you gain insight and confidence, we help you integrate what you've learned into your daily life — so the changes stick beyond the therapy room.

In practice, very little. Both involve talking to a qualified professional about what you're experiencing. Counselling tends to be more present-focused, while therapy may explore deeper patterns — but our practitioners adapt to what you need.

No. You can book directly without a referral. If you'd like to access Medicare rebates, you'll need a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP — but it's not required to get started.

Friends care, but they have their own perspective and limitations. A counsellor is trained to listen without judgement, ask the right questions, and help you see things you can't see on your own — without the complexity of a personal relationship.

That's completely fine. You don't need an agenda. Many people start with 'I'm not sure what's wrong' — and that's a perfectly valid place to begin.

It depends on what you're working through. Some people find a few sessions gives them the clarity they need. Others benefit from regular sessions over a longer period. There's no minimum commitment.

Yes. Everything discussed in sessions is confidential, with the only exceptions being situations where there's a risk of harm to you or someone else. Your practitioner will explain this clearly in your first session.
